Re: challenging student teacher

I have had student teachers in previous years. I have found taking
them on later in the year is better than earlier in the year. If
they are there in the first term, they can hamper your routines and
dim down your expectations. If however, they have gone through one
practicuum already... they have cut their teeth and are a little
more humble.
It sounds like you have a teacher candidate that has more spit than
polish. I agree with a previous poster, contact the supervisour.
This is not a tattle. It is a cleaner way of helping the teacher
candidate to improve her skills.
Sometimes teacher candidates come into the classroom and think they
are the cutting edge and they think they need to make a clean sweep
of the old timers. As an old timer myself, I know I am a heck of a
lot more skilled in my practice than the new ones, even if I am a
little slower. Dazzle your teacher candidate with the rationale for
your lessons. Just letting her watch you is not enough. Once the
lesson is given and then you sit down and explain the rationale and
expectations and your differination, then perhaps she will
recognize she still has something to learn.
We need teacher candidates who can help us and who we can help.
If it is creating more stress and more work for you, then make it
known.
Not everyone is meant for teaching. In my experience it is the
teachers (and teacher candidates) whom recognize they don't know
everything and try to improve their practice who are the best at
their craft. Those whom are over confident do not stretch. I may be
jumping to conclusions but perhaps you have a teacher candidate
whom is a little too confident.
Hubris comes before the fall.
